Hygge House
Scandi Style Granny Flat
Check out this Scandi style granny flat built for Anne & Richard in Brisbane QLD.
In the garden of this Northgate property beneath a canopy of trees, Hygge House oozes the character of the property’s newly renovated Queenslander heritage home.
This Shack has everything son Matt needs for his own space in the family’s backyard while studying at university.
The owners wanted to maintain a spacious garden and some independence between the two homes. So we located the Shack in the back corner of the garden overlooking a lap pool and lush green lawn.
We purposely constructed on a concrete slab so the lawn meets the floor for a seamless connection between the inside and outside.
We then located the bedroom and living room to the north to maximize natural sunlight and views of the pool.
Large central sliding glass doors add symmetry while creating a welcoming entrance into the home.
With Hygge House’s high raked ceilings, open plan living and expansive deck, Matt feels free to study or hang with his mates.
The kitchen has shaker style cabinetry in crisp white, with white stone benchtop and blue-grey subway tiles.
There is an island bench with breakfast bar and a single feature hanging basket pendant light. This adds warmth and texture to the room.
VJ paneling installed throughout adds cozy texture to the walls, reminiscent of Queensland heritage home style. It's also equipped with modern ceiling fans and reverse cycle air conditioning that bring comfort year-round.
The spacious bathroom with high raked ceilings bathroom has a large walk-in shower with built in shower niche for shampoo storage.
We installed a timber wall-mounted vanity and shavers cabinet for additional storage.
Additional wall storage was incorporated above the bedroom robe to house suitcases and ski gear.
With the family’s keen interest in various sports we included a much-needed sports shed at the back of the Shack.
The shed is almost invisible from the outside. You only see the continuation of the Shack's exterior, creating a clean and seamless design style.
A roof gable detail on the existing home was picked up and utilized as the feature gable detail of the home to complete the theme.
Proudly styled by Sarah McCarthy James of Greenwood's Home - we have kept the colour scheme in keeping with fresh neutral coastal tones of the family home.
This is another great build from the team at Outright Building.
From Anne & Richard
"The whole process was so simple and stress free.
Mel took the time to add very specific details so our Funky Little Shack ‘matched’ our main house.
The plans were drawn up in a timely manner, and submitted to council without us having to do a thing. Nothing was ever too much trouble and the communication seamless.
We are thrilled with every aspect of their work, and we now have our dream granny flat in the backyard that has increased our home value considerably."
