Downsizing and minimalist living: It seems to be the ‘movement’ on everyone’s minds at the moment… and rightly so!
Decluttering, living leaner and having a life filled with things that you actually need were some of the driving reasons why the Funky Little Shack concept was brought to life.
Our Chief Designer wanted to create spaces that people actually need, ones that will leave them feeling fulfilled, financially capable and that they are positively contributing to the environment by not living beyond their means. Our modern, stylish and simplistic designs capture the essence of downsizing your lifestyle and living larger all at the same time.
If you’re about to embark on a more mindful, leaner lifestyle then you’re in luck! Our team have curated their top nine ways to stay on track.
1. Plan
Taking some time to plan will allow you to get the best results and fulfilment on your downsizing journey.
We suggest planning your lifestyle change – writing down what’s important to you and what you want to achieve from this shift in lifestyle.
Top tip: A fun way to keep on track is to write yourself a letter and open in six months!
2. Get started and commit to your journey
It’s an exciting time, you’re essentially cleansing yourself from all of life’s ‘clutter’ – whether that be the junk you’ve been hanging on to in your shed, garage or spare cupboards or if it’s unwanted and unused clothes in your cupboard.
Decluttering will allow you to focus on what’s important to you and what will bring you joy in your life.
3. Be confident
Confidence that you will live a happier lifestyle is the key. And frankly, we think this one is one of our easiest steps!
4. Share
There’s a few fun ways to go about this step, either you can donate to the less fortunate or host a swapping/giving party with your friends. This will make you feel empowered, caring and that a weight is lifted off your shoulders!
5. Get creative
Downsizing your life doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be boring, quite the opposite actually! Use this journey as a time to get creative, reimagine old items, swap books between friends and reuse what you can in more ways then you originally thought you could.
6. Say no to more
An important note here is to stop comparing. In theory it sounds simple but in practice it can’t be quite challenging in this modern, over consuming world we live in. Comparisons can be across many items including clothing, technology, home wares and more. Be content with what you have and think to yourself before making a purchase “Do I really need this? Will this make my life better?”
7. Switch off
Particularly from media – whether this be social media, TV or emails. So often in our day we get bombarded by emails pushing for a sale. We suggest unsubscribing from all non-essential subscriptions, limit TV time, unfollow brands on social media and enjoy reading a book.
8. Be accountable
A fun way to stay motivated is to share your journey with friends and family. Encourage them to join in on the fun and share your triumphs along the way – and don’t forget about that letter you wrote to yourself all those months ago!
9. Live in a Funky Little Shack
Our final step to downsizing and minimalist living is to embrace life in a small home or granny flat.
Funky Little Shack provides homeowners with the perfect platform to reimagine their lives, to declutter, refocus and live leaner. It’s a powerful outlet to create a space entirely tailored to you – one that will host long lasting, positive memories for years to come.
